Well, any Divine character would fit the role. Just a matter of whether you want to induce "Heretic Judgment" through words, sharp metal, spells or a mix of either three.
By default, this would either be a Cleric or the Paladin.
For 4th ed, I would consider the Invoker a more fitting role. The idea of "invoking" mass "bow-down-before-me" abilities sounds more fun in purging the world of heresy for me, and yes, I'm grinning this very moment thinking about it

I'm already hoping to roll up an android cat person that is an ax crazy malfunctioning Hello Kitty robot that speaks only by playing out of context Japanese audio clips from my phone and in general runs around trying to be a cute companion robot in the most deadly fashion imaginable.
I mean, come on. DUDE. You can be Woodman from Megaman, or a swarm of psychic hamsters.

Oh, sorry. I'm talking about the original 1978 release. You seem to be talking about the recently released seventh edition. I can't speak for anything but the original since that's all I've played, but battle was pretty slanted in favour of monsters and the environment, ime. I'm sure balance has improved since '78.

GO GO THREAD NECROMANCY
I knew this thread existed somewhere in the bowels of the forum. I'm glad I didn't have to search back as far as I'd feared.
So I'm playing Pathfinder. Anyone have experience with this?
I just leveled up tonight. I'm a level 7 Elf Witch with a Cat familiar (so. freakin. cute.)
My character functions like a wizard (prepared spellcasting) but with hexes and some witch-specific spells. I'm primarily a debuff character, but I do get some high-level attack spells like Fireball due to my association with an Elemental patron deity.

This is, technically, my first tabletop. I played one session of D&D in high school and hated it, but it was a weird combination of not understanding the game and the too much looking up shit in books. My current group plays with a fairly streamlined style and the GM preps enough that there's very little book-flipping. Actually, my husband causes me most book-flipping because he hasn't made all his spell cards yet, so sometimes we have to hunt down what his spells do (he's playing a summoner). I made spell cards for everything I use and wrote a pretty detailed character sheet so all the information is right in front of me. I think I'm picking it up quickly.
I actually have a game tonight -- the big Troll smackdown boss battle. whoo!
I'm loving it. I love my character and her role in combat. I actually have very few spells that deal pure damage -- Fireball, Lightning Bolt and Burning Hands -- but most are debuffs or deal damage and status effects.
I do have Ray of Enfeeblement. It's a 1st level spell, if I remember correctly? I also have Ray of Exhaustion, which is great because a successful save throw still results in a fatigued status. I also have Ray of Sickening.
Some other spells I have: Ear-piercing Scream (deals sonic damage and can daze target), Black Tentacles (creates an area effect spell that grapples creatures within area, dealing damage for every round they're grappling someone), Ill Omen (makes target roll twice on a d20 roll and take the worse of the two rolls), and Evil Eye, a witch-unique hex. It creates a -2 penalty to my choice of either AC, attack rolls, saving throws, or skill checks -- and lasts for x rounds equal to my level. The best part is that a successful save reduces this to only one round -- BUT! I took the Cackle hex, which means that as a move action I can cackle and extend Evil Eye for another round. So as long as I don't move... you're fucked.
I've structured my entire character around assisting the party. I'm pretty hopeless in a one-on-one combat scenario, minus the few big-hitting spells I have, but instead stay in the back ranks of battle and fling nasty spells at the enemies.
Also most of my most crushing spells are evocation spells, which I took Spell Focus and Greater Spell Focus in, so right now the reflex save for, oh, Fireball, for example, is 20.
